Cromwells

Cosy hotel and pub style restaurant with a gorgeous hidden terrace at the rear. The perfect place to spend a Sunday lunch time. Great food too.

I like Cromwells. Describing itself as a restaurant, bar and hotel, it is located on Dogpole and fairly unassuming from the outside. But don't be fooled, especially on a Sunday lunch time in the summer. Trust me, there is no better place to be. With one foot inside the front door it looks like a warm and welcoming pub. Keep going past the bar and out of the back door and you'll find a series of tabled terraces nestled among the spires and old buildings of Shrewsbury. This place is a gem.

In a way I don't want to tell you all about it because it will make it even more difficult for me to get a table but information like this has a right to be shared. I'm not sure if you can book ahead but it would be wise if you can. To be honest the location and atmosphere would probably be able hide mediocre food, but fortunately that's not what they serve. This is somewhere between good pub and restaurant food. Great pastas, open sandwiches, lovely fish and chips with tartar sauce. If you do manage to get the table on the very top terrace, you will want to sit there all day. This place is Sunday afternoons in Shrewsbury for me.

I think it is a great place to eat, drink and socialise. It feels safe and welcoming. local staff, local food and.... sounds like Royston Vasey! It is not like the faceless chains and the food and service is much superior to anything I have experienced in the town's chains. People should support their local independent venues especially when they are good as this.

I've visited Cromwells several times in 2010 and have returned because the food and service are so good - price is not the cheapest but definately worth it. The only drawback for me is the liveliness and lack of space when the Bar gets a bit crowded.

Have had some excellent meals at Cromwells recently, went with a group of friends the other week and we really enjoyed their 'Thursday night steak night', it was great value too.
Love the garden area in the summer as well.

The town's old armoury was moved brick by brick to its present location. Now in the guise of a pub. Serves great traditional English food. Lovely interior and good value.

Great pub and restaurant near the town centre. They have themed food nights. At the moment Thursdays are fish day. Check before booking though as this may change.
