Golden Cross Hotel

Who are they

The Golden Cross claim to be the oldest public house in Shrewsbury, and have been feeding and watering guests for a staggering seven hundred years! Quite a responsibility for the current patrons then. You will find them in the shadow of the ruins of old St Chads church.

What do they offer

Like many local restaurants, the Golden Cross are keen to promote the fact that they take advantage of the local agricultural economy, with the promise of a menu that is updated monthly to reflect dishes that are in season and that take advantage of local ingredients. Soups starting at around a fiver all the way up to main course steaks for twenty pounds. There is plenty of choice both at lunch and dinner.

Why do we like them

We like the artisan cheese board. There are lots of other reasons to like this place, including the atmosphere and the sense of history that you can literally breathe in while you enjoy your meal. But we like to be honest, so make sure you leave yourself room for that work of art in the form of cheese. Lovely.

Traditional restaurant, inside a pub, serving seasonal and where possible local food. Menu changes monthly.

I went here wth my girlfriend to celebrate her birthday recently and it was a superb dining experience, and really the first complete meal I've had in Shrewsbury where the food lives up to the restaurant's aspirations. The menu contained a good selection of choices that lived up to their billing - my shallot tarte tatin in particular was great (though I didn't think the celeriac that came with it was needed, the tomatoes were enough/perfect). The wine list was also great - we had a lovely bottle of cotes du rhone. What stood out for us was the ambience generated through the excellent interior design - it was a pleasant place to be. We will definitely be returning.

We visited the Golden Cross for a Friday lunch. The hosts were welcoming and friendly offering little extra touches such as a bottle of water on the table. The lunch was delicious, we chose some bread and olive olive to share as a light starter followed by the kimcheese hot sandwich and twice fried chips which were delicious. The surroundings were more chic than shabby but in keeping with the old bones of the building. We haven't visited Shrewsbury before, but boy are we glad we discovered this little gem of a place which made our day special. Thanks, we hope to return!

I visited recently with a friend for a mid week lunch. The dining room is quite small but cosy and lovingly furnished - this place is as interesting on the inside as it looks from the outside.

We both went for the steak sandwich - lots of juicy steak, home made chips and dressed salad. Not cheap but the food is good and the surroundings comfortable. I will happily return.

Me and y family have known the owners of this restaurant for many years and have been going to the golden cross since its been open, the food has always been splendid and the service, marvelous. although i must admit that the prices make it quite hard for us to dine there too regularly, we enjoy eating there on special occasions (mothers day, fathers day, birthdays...etc)

Always great food, and always a very welcoming and warm atmosphere. I can't recommend the Golden Cross more highly. I've been there for quiet lunches and with all the family for celebrations... the restaurant is perfect for either. Good pudding wine too!

One of my favorite Shrewsbury restaurants, the food is consistently imaginative, well cooked and made with tasty fresh ingredients. The atmosphere is cozy, relaxed and comfortable and the prices very reasonable considering how good the food is.

Very good food in a small but cosy and romantic setting. Intriguing menu meant my first visit was not going to be my last - if you think the only really good restaurants are French or Italian you won't be disappointed here.

While the food sometimes disappoints (uniformity of texture and taste, perhaps many dishes or sauces prepared in advance?), the atmosphere and warmth of the owners always compensates
